About Us
It All Began With One Man's Dream
In 1929, Sam Freed opened the doors to Sam’s Department Store, setting a standard for quality clothing and exceptional customer service. His unwavering belief in his dream, staff, and customers laid the foundation for a lasting legacy.
Now, 95 years later, that dream has evolved into FREEDS, Canada’s largest independent clothing store for men’s and women’s fashion. With over 50,000 square feet of retail space, FREEDS proudly offers top brands like Coppley, Jack Victor, Joseph Ribkoff, Blundstone, Vuori, and more. While much has changed over the years, our core commitment to quality products and unparalleled customer service remains the same.
Whether shopping online or visiting us in-store at 1526 Ottawa Street, FREEDS continues to deliver an unmatched retail experience built on the values we were founded on.
A Family Legacy Four Generations Strong
Since 1929, FREEDS has been proudly owned and operated by four generations of the Freed and Orman families. Sam Freed’s vision was carried forward by his son, Gerald Freed, and son-in-law, Alan Orman. They, in turn, passed the torch to Gerald’s son, Ari Freed, and Alan’s son, Dan Orman, the current co-owners. Now, Ari’s sons, Derek and Evan Freed, represent the fourth generation, bringing fresh ideas while honoring the traditions that shaped FREEDS.
As a cornerstone of the Windsor-Essex community for 95 years, FREEDS celebrates 95 years of business alongside our friends, family, staff, and loyal customers. Guided by the principles of quality, service, and family values, FREEDS is dedicated to ensuring the legacy of Sam Freed continues to thrive for generations to come.
